Why We Recommend Mamedica

Why UKMC Lounge Recommends Mamedica

From Our Community ยท Norwich

Alicia, from Norwich, was prescribed medical cannabis through Mamedica for fibromyalgia-related chronic pain, anxiety and depression. She had spent years trying to manage these conditions through conventional routes with limited and inconsistent success.

Mamedica connected her with a GMC-registered specialist who took time to understand her full medical history and the specific impact these conditions were having on her daily life. The process was straightforward and the team at Mamedica have been genuinely supportive throughout her treatment journey.

Mamedica's experience with fibromyalgia โ€” a condition where chronic pain, anxiety and low mood frequently overlap โ€” made them a strong fit. We recommend Mamedica particularly for patients managing complex or multiple conditions where an individual treatment plan and ongoing clinical support matter most.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Source: mamedica.co.uk/faqs. All answers verified from Mamedica's published FAQ page.

Getting Started

How do I find out if I am eligible?+

Complete Mamedica's eligibility form at mamedica.co.uk. To complete the assessment, you will need medical records from your GP or specialist. If you have been previously treated at another medical cannabis clinic, you will need to provide details of your first and last prescription and a discharge letter from that clinic.

How quickly can I be seen?+

New patients who have all the necessary documents can typically be scheduled to see a doctor within 7 days. If Mamedica needs to obtain your summary care record from your GP, allow 14 to 21 days. If you already have your medical records, the process can often be completed within a day and an appointment scheduled for the coming week.

Do I need a GP referral?+

Patients usually self-refer to Mamedica and do not require consent from their GP to begin medical cannabis treatment. However, Mamedica does send regular updates to your GP regarding your treatment for safety purposes.

What documents do I need to get started?+

To finalise onboarding, Mamedica requires a completed eligibility form, medical records from your GP or specialist, a digitally signed agreement and photographic ID.

How long does the consultation take?+

Initial consultations are scheduled for 30 minutes via Mamedica's secure patient portal. You will be emailed a meeting link 15 minutes before your consultation. All consultations take place online โ€” Mamedica does not currently offer face-to-face consultations.

Can I use Mamedica if I live in Northern Ireland?+

Yes. Patients who live in Northern Ireland can access Mamedica's clinic and dispensary services.

Consultations and Follow-ups

How often will I need consultations?+

After your first consultation, Mamedica is required by law to schedule a follow-up appointment after one month, then quarterly at months 3, 6 and 9 during your first year. After the first year, only one appointment per year is required.

Can I cancel or change my appointment?+

Yes. Cancel or adjust appointments via your patient portal no later than 48 hours before your appointment to avoid charges. If you need to change within 48 hours, call the clinic team on 0330 580 1170.

Can I switch doctors if I am not satisfied?+

Yes. If you are not satisfied with your doctor, contact Mamedica's clinic team to discuss the matter.

Can I request a repeat prescription?+

Yes, once you have had at least two consultations with Mamedica and are not due a follow-up. Submit requests via the repeat prescription form at mamedica.co.uk/repeat-prescription. Mamedica does not charge for repeat prescriptions.

Medication and Delivery

How long does delivery take after my consultation?+

Following your consultation, Mamedica will confirm your order and request payment for your medication. Once payment is made, allow 5 to 7 working days for delivery. Tracking details are sent by email.

Can my medication be delivered outside the UK?+

No. Mamedica's dispensary team cannot send medication outside the UK due to legal guidelines.

What forms of medication does Mamedica offer?+

Mamedica offers cannabis flower for vaporisation, oils, cartridges and capsules in various combinations of THC, CBD and balanced profiles.

What brands of medication does Mamedica stock?+

Mamedica's approved medicines include products manufactured by: Adven, Adven Cura, Althea Aurora, Aurora Pedanios, Bedrocan, CannFX, CanValue, Clearleaf, Fotmer, Grow, Khiron, MVC, MAMEDICA, Lumir, Satoline, Spectrum Canopy, Tilray, Together Pharma and Weeco.

How much does medication cost?+

On average patients can expect to pay as little as ยฃ5 per day for their medication. Mamedica offers flower from ยฃ5 to ยฃ14 per gram and oil from ยฃ30. Medication costs are separate from clinic plan fees.

Is my prescription for a set amount of time?+

All prescriptions are written for 28 days supply. If you require additional medication, contact the clinic to discuss.

Can I transfer my previous prescription from another clinic?+

Yes. If you are transitioning from another clinic, you can request your previous medication.

Consuming and Dosing

How quickly does medical cannabis take effect?+

When inhaled through vaping, effects can be felt within minutes and peak within 30 minutes to an hour. When taken orally โ€” such as through oils or capsules โ€” onset can take up to 1 to 2 hours as it is absorbed through the digestive system. Always start with a low dose and wait for the onset of effects before taking more.

How should I take cannabis oil?+

Placing cannabis oil under the tongue (sublingual administration) is the most efficient method. The oil is usually supplied with an oral syringe for precise dosage measurement. Mamedica recommends consuming oral products with a fatty meal to aid absorption.

Can I smoke my medical cannabis?+

No. Smoking medical cannabis is not permitted. Vaporisation is the only approved method for cannabis flower. Smoking involves combustion which produces harmful by-products. Vaporising heats the plant material at a lower temperature without creating smoke or ash.

Is medical cannabis plant-based?+

Yes. Medical cannabis is derived from the cannabis plant and contains cannabinoids including THC and CBD.

Should I share my prescription with anyone else?+

No. Sharing prescription medications is illegal and potentially harmful. Prescriptions are specific to the individual patient.

Driving, Work and Travel

Can I drive while taking medical cannabis?+

As a patient prescribed a cannabis medicine, you can continue to drive a motor vehicle provided you are not impaired, the medicine has been prescribed to you and can be evidenced, and you are following the directions of your specialist. You have a statutory medical defence if you can evidence these criteria. Do not drive if you are experiencing sleepiness, poor coordination, impaired thinking, dizziness or visual problems. Source: Cannabis Industry Council guidance, as published by Mamedica.

What should I carry when driving?+

Carry a physical or digital copy of your most recent prescription, photo ID and if possible a letter from your specialist confirming you are their patient. Your medication must be in its original packaging as dispensed by the pharmacist.

Can I travel abroad with my medication?+

It is important to be aware of the restrictions on bringing cannabis-based prescription medicines in or out of countries you are visiting. These medications are highly regulated and may not be legal to possess in certain countries even with a UK prescription. Consult the government website of your destination country before travelling. If you require a travel letter, submit a Travel Document Request at mamedica.co.uk. Mamedica recommends submitting at least two weeks before travel.

Can I use my medication in the workplace?+

Mamedica strongly recommends that all patients inform their workplace about their medical cannabis treatment. Drug tests conducted by employers may detect THC several days after consumption. Some professions including truck drivers, pilots and construction workers may not accept any detectable levels of THC. Be transparent with your employer and seek guidance from your union.

Can I use my prescription in public?+

It is legal to consume your medical cannabis prescription in public. Your medication must be in its original packaging and Mamedica recommends having your prescription letter to hand, either digitally or printed.

Legal and Medical

Is medical cannabis legal in the UK?+

Yes. In November 2018, the UK government rescheduled cannabis-based medicinal products from Schedule 1 to Schedule 2 of the Misuse of Drugs Regulations 2001, recognising their therapeutic benefits. Medical cannabis can only be prescribed for a chronic condition where two previous medications or treatments have failed.

What counts as a previous treatment?+

Any medication, therapy or treatment as prescribed by your GP, a specialist doctor or a licensed practitioner counts towards the requirement for two previous treatments.

Can medical cannabis interact with other medications?+

Yes. Medical cannabis can interact with other medications including prescription drugs and over-the-counter medications. Notify your doctor of all medications you are currently taking during your consultation.

What are the possible side effects?+

Side effects are usually mild and may occur at the beginning of treatment, tending to dissipate within a few hours. Common side effects include nausea, headaches, dizziness, dry mouth, blurred vision, diarrhoea, euphoria, thought impairment, increased appetite, low blood pressure and increased heart rate. Contact your prescriber if you experience side effects. A full list of adverse reactions is available at mamedica.co.uk/faqs.

How should I store my medication?+

Store medication in its original packaging in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and out of the reach of children. Keep upright with the lid tightly secured.

Is Mamedica available on the NHS?+

Access to medical cannabis via the NHS is extremely restricted and usually limited to severe cases of rare epilepsy, vomiting or nausea caused by chemotherapy, and some instances of muscle stiffness caused by multiple sclerosis. Most patients access treatment through private clinics like Mamedica.

What is a Summary Care Record and why does Mamedica need it?+

A Summary Care Record (SCR) is an electronic record containing essential information about a patient's health including medications, allergies and past medical history. Mamedica requires your SCR to verify you meet the legal requirement of having tried two or more previous treatments. You can provide consent for Mamedica's clinic team to request it from your GP, or you can request it directly.
