How to Get a Legal UK Medical Cannabis Prescription
UKMC Lounge is a community for verified UK medical cannabis patients. Below we share the clinics we recommend based on real patient experience — and everything you need to know about the process of getting legally prescribed in the UK.
Important. This page contains personal experiences from UKMC Lounge community members. It is not medical advice. Medical cannabis is a prescription medication in the UK. You must consult a GMC-registered specialist doctor to determine whether it is appropriate for you.
Legal Status
Is Medical Cannabis Legal in the UK?
Yes. Medical cannabis was legalised in the United Kingdom in November 2018. Since then, GMC-registered specialist doctors have been able to prescribe cannabis-based medicinal products to patients for whom other treatments have not worked or have caused unacceptable side effects.
Medical cannabis is not available through most NHS GPs. The majority of patients in the UK access it through specialist private clinics — called Cannabis Clinics or Medical Cannabis Clinics — where a GMC-registered specialist conducts a consultation, reviews your medical history and, where appropriate, issues a prescription.
Your prescription medication is then dispensed by a licensed UK pharmacy and delivered directly to your home.

From Our Head of Membership
Simon's Experience with Releaf
My name is Simon Jones and I am Head of Membership at UKMC Lounge. I was prescribed medical cannabis through Releaf for chronic insomnia and anxiety — and I want to share my experience because when I started looking into it, I genuinely did not know where to begin.
I had tried conventional treatments for years. Sleep medication, various approaches to managing anxiety — nothing had given me consistent relief. A colleague mentioned medical cannabis. My first instinct was scepticism, followed quickly by uncertainty about whether it was even legal and how I would go about it.
What surprised me most about the process with Releaf was how simple and judgement-free it was. I booked a consultation online. A GMC-registered specialist reviewed my medical history and spoke with me about my symptoms and what I had already tried. Within a few working days — Releaf can typically process consultations and issue prescriptions within five working days, often sooner — my prescription medication was dispensed by a licensed UK pharmacy and delivered directly to my door.
No judgement. No complicated process. No feeling like I was doing something unusual. Just a straightforward medical consultation with a specialist who understood my situation.
Medical cannabis has made a meaningful difference to my sleep and to managing my anxiety. I share this not as medical advice — it is not — but because I know how many people in our community are in the same position I was in: struggling, uncertain and not knowing where to start.
If you think you might qualify, I would encourage you to book a consultation and find out. The conversation alone is worth having.

Alicia's Experience with Mamedica
My partner Alicia, from Norwich, was prescribed medical cannabis through Mamedica for fibromyalgia-related chronic pain, anxiety and depression. She had spent years trying to manage these conditions through conventional routes with limited success.
Mamedica connected her with a GMC-registered specialist who took the time to understand her full medical history and the specific impact her conditions were having on her daily life. She has had a great experience so far — the process was straightforward and the team at Mamedica have been genuinely supportive throughout.
Fibromyalgia is one of the conditions for which medical cannabis is increasingly being prescribed in the UK, and Mamedica's team has specific experience working with patients managing chronic pain, anxiety and related conditions.

The Process
How the Process Works
Getting a legal UK medical cannabis prescription is more straightforward than most people expect. Here is what the process typically looks like:
01
Check Your Eligibility
Most UK adults aged 18 or over with a qualifying condition who have tried conventional treatments without sufficient relief may be eligible. You do not need a GP referral. You can self-refer directly to a specialist clinic.
02
Book a Consultation
Book an online consultation with a GMC-registered specialist at your chosen clinic. Consultations are typically conducted via video call. You will be asked about your medical history, current symptoms and treatments you have previously tried.
03
Specialist Review
Your GMC-registered specialist reviews your case and determines whether medical cannabis is clinically appropriate for you. If it is, they will issue a prescription. If not, they will advise on alternative options.
04
Prescription Dispensed
Your prescription is sent to a licensed UK pharmacy. Your medication is prepared and dispatched directly to your home address.
05
Ongoing Support
Your clinic will schedule follow-up appointments to monitor your progress, adjust your prescription if needed and provide ongoing clinical support.
Releaf can typically complete the full process — from first consultation to first prescription — within five working days. In many cases, patients receive their prescription within two working days when consultations are booked early in the week.

Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions, clearly answered.
Is medical cannabis the same as recreational cannabis?
+
No. Medical cannabis in the UK is a prescription medication prescribed by a GMC-registered specialist doctor. It is dispensed by licensed UK pharmacies and must be used in accordance with your prescription. Recreational use of cannabis remains illegal in the UK.
Do I need a GP referral to see a medical cannabis specialist?
+
No. You can self-refer directly to a private medical cannabis clinic without a GP referral. However, the specialist will ask for details of your medical history and previous treatments, so having your medical records available is helpful.
How long does it take to get a prescription?
+
Timelines vary by clinic. Releaf can typically process consultations and issue prescriptions within five working days — often within two working days for consultations booked early in the week.
Will my GP know I have been prescribed medical cannabis?
+
Your specialist may write to your GP to inform them, particularly if your treatment interacts with other medications. You should discuss this with your specialist during your consultation.
Can I use my medication at UKMC Lounge?
+
Yes. UKMC Lounge is a private members space for verified UK medical cannabis prescription holders. Members may use their own legally prescribed medication within the lounge in accordance with our house rules. Vapourisation only. Members must bring their medication in original pharmacy packaging.
Is medical cannabis available on the NHS?
+
Medical cannabis is available on the NHS in very limited circumstances — primarily for children with rare forms of epilepsy. The vast majority of patients in the UK access it through private specialist clinics.
What conditions qualify for medical cannabis in the UK?
+
Common qualifying conditions include chronic pain, fibromyalgia, anxiety, PTSD, depression, chronic insomnia, multiple sclerosis, epilepsy and cancer-related symptoms. Eligibility is determined by a GMC-registered specialist based on your individual medical history.
